Where to drink in York
York is often said to have a pub for every day of the year, and while nobody quite agrees on the count, the quality is not in doubt. The Blue Bell on Fossgate keeps its tiny Edwardian interior intact, Ye Olde Starre Inne on Stonegate has been licensed since the seventeenth century, and the Golden Fleece leans agreeably beside the Shambles.
For something between pub and shrine, the House of the Trembling Madness on Stonegate serves an enormous beer list beneath a medieval roof, while Brew York's riverside taproom brings the city's brewing up to date. The Shambles Market food stalls are handy for lining the stomach between stops.
Beyond the walls lies serious brewing country — Masham, home to Theakston and Black Sheep, makes a fine day trip.
