Where to drink in Manchester

Manchester takes its beer seriously, and has done since the Victorians. The Northern Quarter is the obvious starting point — a dense grid of red-brick streets where craft beer bars sit alongside record shops and street art — while neighbouring Ancoats has grown into one of the city's best eating districts, with the restored Mackie Mayor market hall on Swan Street sitting handily between the two.

The city's pub heritage rewards a slow crawl. The Marble Arch on Rochdale Road pours beers from its own brewery beneath a gloriously tiled Victorian interior, and the Peveril of the Peak's green-glazed exterior makes it one of Manchester's most photographed pubs. In summer, the canalside pubs of Castlefield are a fine alternative.
