Where to drink in Leeds

Leeds has brewing in its bones — this was Tetley's city for nearly two centuries, and the former brewery's art deco headquarters still stands south of the river. The modern scene is led by Northern Monk, whose taproom occupies a Grade II-listed former flax store in Holbeck, with a further cluster of breweries out along the Kirkstall Road corridor.

In the centre, start at Whitelock's Ale House, tucked down a narrow yard off Briggate and trading since 1715, then wander through Kirkgate Market — one of the largest covered markets in Europe — before picking a route through the bars around Call Lane and the railway arches of Granary Wharf.

Don't miss:

  • Whitelock's Ale House, the city's oldest pub
  • Northern Monk's taproom in Holbeck
  • Kirkgate Market for lunch
  • Canalside bars at Granary Wharf
