Where to drink in Birmingham

Birmingham rewards drinkers who look past the city-centre chains. Its Victorian pub heritage is remarkable: The Bartons Arms in Aston, all tilework and sweeping staircase, has one of the finest interiors in England, while The Wellington on Bennetts Hill keeps a constantly rotating line-up of cask ales that has made it the city's real-ale institution.

Digbeth is where the newer energy lives. Dig Brew Co makes its beer in an old factory there, and Digbeth Dining Club gathers the city's best street food under the railway arches. For eating more widely, the Balti Triangle in Sparkbrook gave its name to a whole style of curry, and the market halls by the Bullring have fed the city for generations.

Don't miss:

  • The Bartons Arms, a Victorian masterpiece in Aston
  • Cask ale at The Wellington on Bennetts Hill
  • Street food under the arches at Digbeth Dining Club
  • A balti on Ladypool Road in the Balti Triangle
