Where to drink in Newcastle
Newcastle gave its name to one of the world's most travelled beers, but the city's drinking culture runs far deeper than the famous brown ale. Head east from the Quayside into the Ouseburn Valley and you'll find a proper beer quarter, where Brinkburn St Brewery pours its own craft beers and the Free Trade Inn serves a well-kept pint with a famous view of the Tyne bridges.
In the city centre, the Crown Posada is a slender Victorian treasure of stained glass and dark wood, while Blackfriars — a restored medieval friary — now brews its own beer at St Dominic's micro-brewery. Wylam Brewery, in the Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park, opens its taproom in grand surroundings.
For food, the Grainger Market is the place for a stottie and a browse.
