Where to drink in Kent
Kent grew the hops that built British beer. For centuries the county's hop gardens supplied the nation's brewers, and the white-cowled oast houses where the harvest was dried still punctuate the Weald — many now homes, a few still working. East Kent Goldings, the celebrated local hop, remains prized by brewers around the world.
Faversham is the county's beer capital, home to Shepherd Neame, Britain's oldest brewer, which traces its history to 1698 and runs regular tours of its creekside brewery. In Canterbury, the Foundry Brew Pub brews in the city centre, and the Parrot — one of the city's oldest inns — pours local ales beneath ancient beams.
On the coast, a plate of Whitstable oysters with a dark beer is one of England's great pairings.
