Calories in Stella Artois: Pint, Bottle and Unfiltered Compared

How many calories are in Stella Artois? Pint, bottle and can figures, plus Stella Unfiltered and the alcohol-free version compared side by side.

Calories in Stella Artois: Pint, Bottle and Unfiltered Compared

A pint of Stella Artois contains about 227 calories. A 440ml can is around 176, and a 330ml bottle about 132. Those figures put Stella squarely in the premium-lager bracket โ€” heavier than the standard British session lagers, lighter than the strongest of the world beers โ€” which is precisely where the brand has always aimed to sit.

But "Stella" is no longer one beer. There's the classic 4.6% lager, the stronger Stella Unfiltered, and an alcohol-free version at the other extreme. The calorie spread across the family is enormous, so here's the lot, side by side.

Classic Stella Artois: the numbers

Stella's published nutrition works out at roughly 40 calories per 100ml. Scaled across the servings you'll actually meet:

  • Pint (568ml): about 227 calories
  • 440ml can: about 176 calories
  • 330ml bottle: about 132 calories
  • Half pint (284ml): about 114 calories

Standard caveat, and it matters more for Stella than most: these figures are approximate, derived from widely published per-100ml numbers, and the recipe has a history of changing โ€” check the label for the current version.

Why does that history matter? Because Stella is the rare beer whose calorie count has been repeatedly cut in public. The "reassuringly expensive" lager of the 1990s was brewed at 5.2%; the UK version was trimmed to 4.8% in the late 2000s and then to 4.6%, where it sits today. Each cut took calories with it โ€” a 5.2% Stella pint would have been around 250 calories, so today's drinker is roughly 25 calories a pint better off than their predecessors, whatever they think of the change. Strength is the engine of beer calories: alcohol carries about 7 calories per gram, and well over half of any lager's calories come from the alcohol itself.

Stella Unfiltered: the premium premium

Stella Artois Unfiltered, the hazy, golden version that's spread across UK bars in the last few years, is brewed at 5.0% โ€” and the calories climb accordingly. Its published figures work out at around 45 calories per 100ml, which means:

  • Pint: roughly 250โ€“260 calories
  • 330ml bottle: roughly 150 calories

That's a 25โ€“30 calorie premium per pint over the classic, for half a percent more alcohol and that soft unfiltered body. Worth it on taste grounds, quite possibly; just know it moves Stella from the middle of the premium pack to very near the top, alongside San Miguel at about 255.

Stella Artois Alcohol Free: the outlier

At the other end of the family, Stella's 0.0% version rewrites the numbers completely. A 330ml bottle carries about 60 calories โ€” under half the standard bottle โ€” and scaled to a notional pint it would be barely 100 calories. With the alcohol gone, what remains is mostly malt carbohydrate, which is why alcohol-free beers land light but never at zero.

It's a genuinely useful option for pacing a long session: alternating classic and alcohol-free Stella halves both the calories and the units while keeping the same glass in your hand. It also earns a spot in our ranking of the lowest calorie beers in the UK, where you'll find its closest rivals compared.

Stella vs the rest of the bar

Where does classic Stella sit among the beers it competes with? Per 568ml pint, all approximate:

BeerABVApprox. kcal per pint
Carling4.0%190
Guinness Draught4.2%210
Birra Moretti4.6%215
Madrรญ Excepcional4.6%220
Stella Artois4.6%227
Peroni Nastro Azzurro5.1%240
San Miguel5.0%255

Stella sits almost exactly where its strength predicts, a whisker above its fellow 4.6% lagers Moretti and Madrรญ and comfortably below the true 5%-plus world beers. Two comparisons tend to surprise people. First, a pint of Peroni costs you about 13 calories more than a pint of Stella โ€” the green bottle's sleekness is doing a lot of work. Second, a pint of Guinness is about 17 calories lighter than a Stella, despite seven decades of jokes about stout being a meal in a glass.

Keeping Stella in a sensible place

A single pint of Stella at 227 calories is nothing to agonise over โ€” it's less than a large glass of wine and change. The arithmetic only turns on you in multiples: four pints is over 900 calories, plus 10.4 units against the NHS's recommended 14 a week. If Stella's your beer and the numbers are on your mind, the levers are easy to pull. The 330ml bottle serve saves you 95 calories against a pint every time. Skipping the Unfiltered upgrade saves another 25โ€“30. And subbing in the alcohol-free version for alternate rounds is the single biggest saving available without changing what you drink.

Figures throughout are approximate โ€” AB InBev has form for adjusting this particular recipe, so the label in front of you is the only number that's guaranteed current.
